What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read common grade-level words quickly and correctly, both alone and in sentences. They use familiar sound-spelling patterns for regular words. For irregular words, they recognize expected parts and remember unexpected letters.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads a mixed word list and a short passage without guessing or pausing to sound out familiar words. The student notices errors and corrects them while keeping the sentence fluent.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a word from its first letter or from the picture instead of checking every letter. They may sound out an irregular word as if every spelling follows the usual pattern. Some memorize whole word shapes and confuse similar words such as though, thought, and through.

How to Assess It

Give students 12 mixed word cards, including six regular words and six irregular words, then have them read the same words in a short paragraph. Mark errors and pauses longer than two seconds.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use letter tiles to build six target words, then box the decodable parts and circle letters that do not match expected sounds.

  2. Have partners explain which part of each target word follows a known pattern and which letters they must remember.

  3. Play a three-second flash game: show one word card, students read it, then use it in a sentence for a point.

  4. Give students a school lunch menu and ask them to highlight ten common words, then read the menu aloud to a partner.
