What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and spell unfamiliar words by noticing vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, syllable patterns, prefixes, and suffixes. They also read common regular and irregular words accurately and without long pauses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read and spell unfamiliar words by using vowel patterns, syllable types, and meaningful word parts. They read common regular and irregular words quickly in sentences without guessing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sound out each vowel separately in teams such as oa or ai. They may split syllables in the wrong place, overlook affixes, or guess irregular words from the first letter.
How to Assess It
- Have students read train, storm, robot, helpful, and could, then dictate float, market, sunset, reread, and because. Ask them to mark vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, syllables, and affixes.

Ways to Teach It
Students use letter tiles to build, read, and spell words such as floating, farmer, replay, and hopeful.
Ask students to explain in writing how they would break apart the word careless before reading and spelling it.
Play word pattern bingo with words containing vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, prefixes, suffixes, and common irregular spellings.
Students find five patterned or irregular words on a menu, flyer, or classroom schedule, mark the useful parts, and read them aloud.
