What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into a base word and added beginning or ending parts. They use the spelling and meaning of those parts to read and write the whole word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can separate a word into its base, prefix, and suffix. They can read the complete word, explain how the affixes affect meaning, and spell a similar word correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read only the base word and ignore the prefix or suffix. They may miss spelling changes, such as changing carry to carried, or assume an affix has the same effect in every word.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word disagreeable and ask them to circle the base, underline each affix, read the word, and explain its meaning. Then dictate the word replayed for them to spell.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-word, prefix, and suffix cards, then have them build, read, and record words such as unhappy, replayed, and careless.
Ask students to explain in writing how adding re- or un- changes the meaning of a base word.
Play Affix Match, where students pair word-part cards, read the completed word, and earn a point for spelling it correctly.
Have students find five affixed words in a classroom notice, menu, or article, then mark each base word and affix.
