What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into syllables and identify common syllable types. They use those patterns to read words and spell them accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students divide unfamiliar words into meaningful syllable chunks and use each syllable pattern to read the word accurately. They can also spell multisyllable words by choosing vowel patterns that match the sounds.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split words between letters that belong together, such as vowel teams or consonant blends. They may treat every vowel as a separate syllable or apply one vowel sound to every syllable type.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words robot, napkin, sunshine, market, and table. Ask them to mark the syllable breaks, name each syllable type, read each word, and spell one from dictation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs syllable cards from words such as picnic, robot, sunshine, and purple, then have them build, divide, label, read, and spell each word.
Ask students to explain in writing how the syllable types in a word helped them choose the correct vowel sounds.
Play Syllable Sort Relay, with teams sorting word cards under closed, open, vowel team, silent e, r-controlled, and consonant-le headings.
Use a school lunch menu or event flyer to find multisyllable words, mark their syllables, and practice reading them aloud.
