What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar multisyllabic words into manageable parts. They use vowel patterns and syllable types to pronounce each part, blend the word, and spell it.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students independently divide an unfamiliar word into accurate syllables and identify the pattern in each part. They pronounce the whole word, check it in context, and spell similar dictated words correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split words by letters rather than spoken beats. They may treat every vowel as a separate syllable or overlook vowel teams, silent e, and r-controlled vowels. Some can divide a word correctly but still choose the wrong vowel sound.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Divide misfortune into syllables, label each syllable type, and read it aloud. Then dictate hopefulness and have students spell it with syllable breaks marked.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to cut at syllable boundaries, sort by syllable type, and rebuild into complete words.

  2. Ask students to explain how they would decode the word unbelievable, naming each syllable pattern and vowel sound.

  3. Play Syllable Relay, where teams divide, label, read, and spell one multisyllabic word at each station.

  4. Use words from a science or social studies page, and have students mark syllable breaks before reading the paragraph aloud.
