What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find vowel patterns and split unfamiliar words into pronounceable syllables. They use closed, open, silent-e, vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant-le patterns to read and spell words.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can divide reptile into rep/tile, label the patterns, and blend the word without guessing from its first letter. The student can also spell a heard word by recording each syllable with a matching pattern.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split words after every vowel, even when two vowels form one sound. They may treat every vowel as short, pronounce silent e, misread consonant-le endings, or guess from context.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Divide, label by syllable type, and read aloud robot, napkin, and candle. Then dictate sunshine for students to spell and divide.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to cut at syllable breaks, label each syllable type, then blend the parts and check with a dictionary.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the syllable patterns in robot and rabbit lead to different vowel sounds.

  3. Play Syllable Sort Relay with word cards, six labeled type mats, and one point for accurate division, labeling, and reading.

  4. Collect multisyllabic words from menus, signs, or school notices, then have students mark the syllables and read each word aloud.
