What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into meaningful parts, including prefixes, bases, roots, and suffixes. They use those parts to pronounce the whole word and check it against the sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately mark meaningful parts in words such as previewed, careless, and disagreement. They read the whole word smoothly, then check that its meaning fits the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split words at the wrong place, such as reading reach as re plus ach. They may identify an affix but ignore how the whole word sounds, or confuse a base with a syllable.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read aloud, “A miscalculation changed the result.” Mark the prefix, base, and suffix in miscalculation, then explain how the parts helped you read it.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs prefix, base, and suffix cards to build words, mark each part, and read every completed word aloud.
Ask, “How do the parts of disagreement help you read it?” then have students write and defend their word breaks.
Play Morpheme Match: students race to combine affix and base cards into real words, then earn points by reading them correctly.
Have students hunt for long words in a science article, box each base, circle affixes, and read the words to a partner.
