4.FFR.3 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

• 4.FFR.3.A

  Use knowledge of syllabication and syllable types to decode and encode words.

• 4.FFR.3.B

  Use knowledge of morphology (suffixes, prefixes, root/base) to decode words.

• 4.FFR.3.C

  Read grade-level high-frequency words, including decodable and irregular words, with automaticity and accuracy.

What Students Need to Do

Students use syllable patterns and meaningful word parts to read and spell unfamiliar grade-level words. They also read common decodable and irregular words quickly and accurately.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students break unfamiliar words into useful syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and roots. They read the whole word accurately, spell it from its parts, and recognize high-frequency words without pausing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split words at the wrong place or treat every vowel as a separate syllable. They may ignore prefixes and suffixes, misread irregular words, or read familiar words too slowly.

How to Assess It

Give students five unfamiliar multisyllabic words and three high-frequency words. Ask them to mark syllables or word parts, read each word, and spell two from dictation.

   Give pairs word cards, scissors, and syllable labels, then have them cut, sort, rebuild, read, and spell each multisyllabic word.

   Ask students to explain in writing how the prefix, root, and suffix help them read and understand the word disagreement.

   Play a word-building relay where teams combine prefix, base, and suffix cards, then read and spell each completed word.

4. 04

   Use a school lunch menu or event flyer to find multisyllabic and high-frequency words, mark their parts, and practice reading them smoothly.
