What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use common vowel patterns to read and spell words they have not memorized. They identify vowel teams such as ai, ee, and oa, plus r-controlled patterns such as ar, or, and ur.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read unfamiliar words such as floating, birthday, and cheerful. They also choose the correct vowel spelling when writing words from dictation or composing sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may pronounce each vowel separately in words such as train or boat. They may confuse er, ir, and ur, or assume one vowel team always represents the same sound.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words toast, dream, spoil, sharp, storm, and turn. Ask them to read each word, then spell one dictated sentence using two of them.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles to build, read, and sort words such as train, seed, boat, star, fork, and turn.
Ask students to explain how the vowel sound changes in hop, hope, and horse, then write one sentence using each word.
Play word sort relay with cards labeled by patterns such as ai, ee, oa, ar, or, and ur.
Use a grocery flyer to find words with target patterns, then create a shopping list organized by vowel spelling.
