What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students blend patterns such as ai, ee, oa, ar, er, ir, or, and ur when reading unfamiliar words. They use the same patterns to spell words they hear.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads words such as train, seed, boat, fork, and turn without guessing from the first letter. The student hears each word’s sounds and chooses the matching spelling pattern.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read each vowel separately in team words, or use a short vowel sound in boat and seed. They often confuse er, ir, and ur, or forget that r changes the vowel sound.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with five words to read: mail, feet, road, star, and turn. Then dictate rain, goat, fork, and bird for students to spell.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build rain, seed, boat, farm, fork, and turn, then swap one part to make a new word.

  2. Ask, “What happens to a vowel’s sound when r follows it in car, her, bird, fork, and turn?”

  3. Play a word sort relay with ai, ee, oa, ar, er, ir, or, and ur cards; students match picture cards to patterns.

  4. Search a grocery flyer for words with target patterns, then circle each pattern and read the words to a partner.
