What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students blend vowel patterns such as ai, ee, oa, ar, and or to read unfamiliar one-syllable words. They also choose these patterns when spelling words they hear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads words like rain, seed, boat, farm, and fork without guessing from the first letter. The student segments a spoken word and writes the matching vowel team or r-controlled pattern.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sound out each vowel separately in team words, reading rain as ra-in. They may use a short vowel in car or fork, or mix up er, ir, and ur. Some assume long vowel spellings are interchangeable, such as writing rayn for rain.
How to Assess It
- Have students read rain, seed, boat, farm, and fork, then spell train and storm from dictation. Check whether they blend each vowel pattern and choose the correct spelling.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles to build and read rain, seed, boat, farm, and fork, then change one part to make a new word.
Ask, "What does the vowel sound like before r in car, fern, bird, fork, and turn?" Record students' observations.
Play vowel pattern bingo using word cards with ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, ar, er, ir, or, and ur.
Have students find vowel team and r-controlled words on classroom signs, book covers, or food packages, then copy and read them.
