What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use models and simulations to show how voting, caucuses, and due process work. They define a problem, gather facts, compare options, carry out a choice, and judge the result with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a civic or school issue, a student can identify relevant facts and explain the benefits and drawbacks of several options. The student can choose a fair process, implement a solution, and use a clear measure to decide whether it worked.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat voting as the entire democratic process or assume the majority always gets its way. They may confuse a caucus with an election and due process with guaranteed innocence. They may choose the first solution they like without considering evidence or tradeoffs.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A club must choose a service project, but one proposal was removed without explanation. Explain how due process should address the removal, compare two options, choose one, and name one measure for checking the result.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Run a mock caucus where students choose proposal corners, hear one-minute arguments, switch if persuaded, and record the final count.

  2. Discuss when majority rule should be limited by due process, using one example from the mock caucus or a current event.

  3. Give teams shuffled decision-step cards and a school problem; teams race to order the cards, then justify their chosen solution.

  4. Have students investigate cafeteria food waste, compare two possible fixes, recommend one to the principal, and set a measure for checking results.
