What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help make group choices by listening, taking turns, discussing options, and voting when needed. They name a shared problem, collect facts, compare possible solutions, try one, and check whether it worked.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain the problem, suggest more than one solution, and name a benefit or drawback of each. The student participates fairly in a group choice, helps carry it out, and explains whether the result solved the problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think voting means everyone gets their first choice or that the loudest person decides. They may choose the first idea without gathering facts or comparing options. They may also forget to check the results after trying a solution.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Our class has too many scraps on the floor after art. List two solutions, circle the better choice, and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cups, labels, and mixed classroom supplies to design, choose, test, and revise a fair system for organizing the materials.
Ask, “How should our class choose a new read-aloud?” Record options, discuss benefits and drawbacks, then hold a private vote.
Play Solution Sort with problem cards and solution cards, having pairs match them and reject choices that are unfair or unlikely to work.
Examine a crowded school pickup area, list possible improvements, choose one as a class, and explain how adults could test it.
