What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share ideas, listen to others, take turns, and use voting or agreement to make a group choice. They accept the result and help carry out the decision.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain the choices, give a reason, listen without interrupting, and cast one vote. The student can state the group decision and support it, even if another choice was preferred.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the loudest person decides or that voting can happen before everyone speaks. They may also think students whose choice loses do not need to support the group decision.

How to Assess It

Put students in groups of four and ask them to choose one indoor recess game. Watch for turn-taking, listening, one vote per student, and acceptance of the result.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out two possible spots for a class plant, then have groups inspect both, share reasons, and vote with paper ballots.

  2. Ask students to respond to this prompt: How should everyone act when their choice does not win?

  3. Give groups procedure cards labeled name choices, share reasons, vote, count, and accept, then race to place them in order.

  4. Show two possible locations for a neighborhood bench, then have students discuss community needs and vote for one location.
