What Students Need to Do: Students share ideas, listen to classmates, and take turns speaking. They help choose among options by voting or reaching agreement, then follow the group decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can suggest an option, hear another view, and cast one vote. The student accepts the result even when another option wins.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the loudest person or teacher always decides. They may vote more than once, copy a friend’s vote, or refuse to accept the result.
How to Assess It: Ask students to choose between two read-aloud books using a show-of-hands vote. Watch for one vote per student and respectful acceptance of the result.

Lesson moves

Give groups blocks and two building choices, then have them share ideas, vote once, and build the winning design together.
Ask, “How should we choose a class game fairly?” and record student ideas about turns, listening, and voting.
Play a voting practice game where students place one counter under a picture choice, count totals, and announce the winner.
Let students propose two locations for a classroom supply bin, discuss each location, vote, and move the bin to the winner.
