What Students Need to Do: Students identify an issue, suggest possible choices, discuss those choices, and vote using agreed rules. They accept the result while respecting people who preferred another option.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can follow meeting rules, state a position with a reason, listen to others, and cast one vote. They can tally votes, announce the result, and explain why the process was fair.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the loudest group wins or that voting is fair even when choices and rules are unclear. They may also think majority rule allows winners to ignore the rights and concerns of others.
How to Assess It: Ask students to choose one of three uses for a class supply budget, then write the discussion and voting steps needed for a fair decision.

Lesson moves

Hold a class vote on how to use ten minutes of Friday class time, with nominations, brief speeches, secret ballots, and a tally.
Ask students to write: How should the class respond when the winning choice was not your choice?
Give groups shuffled procedure cards, then have them race to arrange proposal, discussion, voting, tallying, and announcing in a fair order.
Read a local council agenda item, then let students propose options and vote as council members after hearing public comments.
