What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share ideas, listen to classmates, take turns, and vote on a group choice. They follow the agreed process and accept the result respectfully.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain a choice, listen without interrupting, and cast one vote. The student can identify the majority choice and work with the group afterward.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the loudest person or their friend should decide. They may also believe a majority vote means everyone agreed or that losing permits complaining or refusing to participate.

How to Assess It

Ask students to choose between two class read-alouds using discussion and a private vote. Have each student write the winning choice and one respectful next step.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups three playground picture cards, then have them discuss, vote, tally results, and select one activity for a pretend recess.

  2. Ask, "How should we respond when our choice loses a fair vote?" Students write two respectful actions and share one.

  3. Play Decision Steps Relay, where teams order cards labeled share ideas, listen, vote, count, accept, and participate.

  4. Review a local ballot or school council decision, then identify how people shared views, voted, and responded to the result.
