What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a simple classroom or community problem and find facts about it. They suggest possible solutions, compare the benefits and drawbacks, choose one to try, and decide whether it worked.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain the problem, name at least two possible solutions, and give a reason for a choice. After trying the solution, the student can describe what improved and what should change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first idea without comparing it to another. They may think the most popular choice is always fair or list only benefits. Some forget to check whether the solution worked.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Two groups want the same playground ball. Draw or write two solutions, choose one, and explain how you would know it worked.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give four students one box of crayons, then have them create, test, and revise a fair sharing plan.

  2. Ask, “Our reading area is too noisy. What are two solutions, and what is one benefit and drawback of each?”

  3. Use solution cards for classroom problems, and have pairs sort each option into helpful, unhelpful, or needs more information.

  4. Observe litter near the classroom, choose one cleanup plan, try it for a day, and count how much litter remains.
