What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work through a classroom or community problem in clear steps. They use relevant facts to compare possible responses and select one. After trying it, they judge the results and suggest changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a problem, a student can identify relevant facts, propose at least two solutions, and compare benefits and drawbacks. The student chooses a solution, plans its use, and explains how to tell whether it worked.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first idea they hear or treat personal opinions as facts. They may list only benefits, overlook likely drawbacks, or assume a solution worked without checking results.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “The playground has too much litter. List two possible solutions, one benefit and drawback for each, your choice, and how you would check it.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cups, trays, and tape to redesign a crowded lunch line, test each layout, and record wait times.

  2. Ask students to write which solution best reduces playground litter and support their choice with two facts.

  3. Play a scenario card game where teams earn points for naming options, benefits, drawbacks, and a way to measure results.

  4. Have students observe one school problem, gather simple data, and write a recommendation to the principal.
