What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how voting, due process, and caucuses work and why each process is used. They use a role-play, flowchart, or model to show the steps and participants.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students put the steps of each process in a logical order and describe each participant’s role. They also explain how rules protect fairness and public participation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a caucus is the same as a private ballot or that every election uses caucuses. They may also think due process guarantees a favorable result rather than fair procedures.

How to Assess It

Give students three process cards labeled voting, due process, and caucus. Have them choose one, draw its steps, and explain how one rule supports fairness.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Run a mock class election with candidate statements, voter registration cards, secret ballots, vote counting, and a posted result.

  2. Ask students to write which process best protects fairness, voting, due process, or caucuses, and support their choice with two details.

  3. Give teams mixed step cards for voting, due process, and caucuses, then race to sort and sequence each process correctly.

  4. Show a local sample ballot and have students identify offices, propositions, voter choices, and features that protect ballot privacy.
