What Students Need to Do

Students compare local, Texas, and national government. They name officials, explain whether voters elect them or another official appoints them, and match services to each level.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify officials such as a mayor, governor, and president and place them at the correct level. They can explain who selects each official and sort services such as police, state highways, and national defense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the president leads state and local governments or that every official is elected. They may also assign all services to one level or confuse public services with private businesses.

How to Assess It

Give students six cards: mayor, governor, president, police, state highways, and national defense. Have them sort each under local, state, or national and explain one choice.

   Build a three-level government chart with official cards, election symbols, and service picture cards.
