Texas TEKS K.3

K.3 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations, counts, pictures, or models to explain what happened. They suggest a solution and give evidence for it. They share ideas, listen, and respond kindly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can make a clear claim and point to an observation, result, or model that supports it. The student can share the idea alone or with a group and identify evidence used by a classmate.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give a guess without evidence or describe what they did instead of explaining what happened. They may think a model must look exactly like the real object. Some wait to speak rather than listening for evidence in a classmate's explanation.

How to Assess It

Show a picture chart of ice melting faster in sunlight than in shade. Ask, “Where should we put an ice cube to slow melting, and what evidence supports your answer?”

   Roll toy cars down two ramps, measure distances with cubes, then have students explain which ramp worked better using the results.

   Ask, “Which classroom object would make the best rain shelter?” Students draw a choice, add evidence, and discuss answers with partners.

   Play Evidence Match by pairing picture claim cards with observation cards, then asking students to explain each match aloud.

4. 04

   Test paper towel, cloth, and wax paper on a small spill, then choose a cleanup material and support the choice with results.
