What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use observations, measurements, and models to explain results or propose a solution. They connect each claim to evidence and relevant scientific principles. They present their reasoning and respond respectfully to competing explanations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a data set or model, a student makes a clear claim, cites relevant evidence, and explains how the evidence supports the claim. During group critique, the student asks evidence-focused questions and revises when stronger evidence appears.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state an opinion as a claim or list numbers without connecting them to the claim. They may treat models as exact copies of reality. They may challenge the speaker rather than the evidence or reasoning.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A cup in sunlight warmed from 22°C to 31°C, while one in shade warmed to 24°C. Explain the difference using evidence, then respectfully answer a classmate who says shade had no effect.

Ways to Teach It
Build two paper bridge designs, test each with pennies, record the loads, and recommend one design using the results.
Plants under 2, 6, and 10 hours of light grew 5, 12, and 18 centimeters; write and discuss the best explanation.
Play Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Match by pairing prepared cards, then challenge one mismatched set and explain why it fails.
Map hot spots around campus with thermometer readings, then propose one shade location and justify it with the temperature data.
