What Students Need to Do: Students explain a scientific idea or design choice using clear claims, evidence, and reasoning. They present their thinking alone and with a group through speech, writing, diagrams, models, or digital slides.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose a format that fits the audience and purpose. Their explanation is accurate, uses relevant evidence, and clearly shows each group member's contribution.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list facts or observations without explaining how they support a claim. In group work, one student may do all the speaking, or diagrams may lack labels and captions.
How to Assess It: Give students a data table and ask them to explain one conclusion in a labeled diagram and a three-sentence response. Check for a claim, evidence, and reasoning.

Lesson moves

Give teams cups, foil, and tape to build a boat, then present a labeled model explaining one design choice.
Ask students to write and discuss: Which format best explains our results, a graph, diagram, paragraph, or speech, and why?
Play Explanation Relay, where partners take turns adding a claim, evidence, reasoning, diagram label, or clarifying detail to a shared response.
Have students create a one-minute weather briefing using local forecast data, a visual, and an explanation of expected conditions.
