What Students Need to Do: Students share what they noticed, what they think happened, or how they solved a problem. They communicate alone and with others through talk, drawings, labels, or models.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives a clear explanation or solution using details from an observation or task. The student can also listen, take turns, and help create a shared explanation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name an object or event without explaining what happened. They may think an unlabeled picture tells the whole idea, or let one child speak for the group.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw what happens when an ice cube sits in the room and explain their drawing to a partner. Listen for a clear observation and explanation.

Lesson moves

In pairs, build a block bridge for a toy car, then show the class how the design solves the problem.
Use the prompt, “What happened to the ice, and how do you know?” for partner talk followed by a labeled drawing.
Play Explain It Three Ways: students draw, act out, and orally explain the same classroom observation.
Inspect a messy classroom supply area, propose an organizing solution, and make a picture sign that explains it.
