What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share scientific claims and design ideas using evidence, labels, models, diagrams, speech, and writing. They work alone and with classmates, adjusting their message for the audience and format.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a clear claim or proposed solution, supports it with observations or test results, and uses accurate science words. In group work, the student listens, adds relevant ideas, and helps produce a clear shared explanation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without linking them to a claim, or describe a design without explaining why it works. They may treat group communication as one person speaking, or assume a colorful poster is clear when labels and evidence are missing.
How to Assess It
- Give students a photo and data table from a plant growth test. Ask them to write a three-sentence explanation, then tell a partner the same idea using the data as evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Teams build a foil boat, test its load, then present a labeled sketch that explains one successful design choice.
Ask, “Which evidence best supports your explanation, and how would you present it to a younger student?”
Play Evidence Match: students pair claim cards with observation cards, then explain each match aloud to a partner.
Have students create a one-minute weather safety message using a local forecast map, one recommendation, and two supporting details.
