What Students Need to Do: Students use observations and evidence to explain what happened or why an idea works. They share ideas alone and with classmates through speaking, writing, drawings, labels, or simple models.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student names what happened, points to an observation, and uses it to support an explanation. The student can present a possible fix with a partner and answer a simple question about it.
Common Misconceptions: Students often tell what they saw but do not explain why it happened. They may give answers without evidence or make drawings without labels. In partner work, they may let one person do all the talking.
How to Assess It: Show students a picture of a wilted plant. Ask them to draw or write what may have happened, include one clue, and explain their answer to a partner.

Lesson moves

Build a foil boat, test it with pennies, then work with a partner to draw and label one design change.
Show a melting ice cube and ask, “What happened, and what evidence supports your explanation?” Students share aloud, then write one sentence.
Play Explain and Pass: students draw a picture card, explain the science idea, then pass it to a classmate who adds detail.
Inspect a classroom spill setup, then have pairs present a labeled drawing showing how to clean it safely and prevent another spill.
