What Students Need to Do: Students present scientific explanations and design solutions clearly on their own and with a group. They use evidence, scientific terms, and formats such as diagrams, reports, models, or oral presentations.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make a clear claim, support it with relevant evidence, and explain their reasoning. In group work, they share speaking and writing tasks while keeping the final message consistent.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list observations without explaining how the evidence supports their claim. They may add scientific terms, diagrams, or data that are inaccurate, unlabeled, or unrelated to the proposed solution.
How to Assess It: Give students a data table and ask them to write a three-sentence explanation with a claim, one piece of evidence, and clear reasoning.

Lesson moves

Give teams cups, filters, and gravel to design a water filter, then present a labeled model and evidence-based explanation.
Ask students to explain which evidence best supports a claim, then compare their written response with a partner's response.
Play a claim-evidence-reasoning card sort where teams match claims with relevant data and reasoning statements.
Have groups create a one-page proposal for reducing cafeteria waste, including evidence, a labeled diagram, and assigned speaking roles.
