What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use observations, measurements, graphs, diagrams, or physical models to explain why something happened. They propose a fix for a problem and connect their evidence to accepted science.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student makes a clear claim, cites relevant data, and uses a model or science principle to connect the evidence to the claim. The student proposes a workable solution and explains why the evidence supports it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often copy numbers into an answer without explaining how the numbers support the claim. They may treat a model as proof, ignore conflicting data, or choose a solution based on preference.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: After 10 minutes, an ice cube under black paper lost 12 grams, while one under white paper lost 5 grams. Explain the result using energy transfer, then recommend a cooler cover color and support your choice.
