What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations, measurements, graphs, and models to explain why something happened. They suggest a solution and point to evidence showing why it should work.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student makes a clear claim, cites relevant data, and explains how a model supports the claim. The student proposes a workable solution tied to the evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state an opinion without citing measurements or observations. They may treat a model as an exact copy, or propose a solution unrelated to the data.

How to Assess It

Give students plant growth data and a root diagram. Ask, "Why did Plant A grow more, and what change would help Plant B? Use both sources."

  1. Build paper bridges, test how many coins each holds, record results, draw a model, and propose one evidence-based redesign.
