What Students Need to Do: Students explain why something happened or recommend a way to fix a problem. They use observations, measurements, graphs, diagrams, or physical models to support their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose evidence that directly supports their claim and explain the connection. They can revise an explanation or solution when results do not match their first idea.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give an opinion, list results without explaining them, or choose evidence that does not match the claim. They may treat a model as decoration rather than a tool for showing how something works.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Show a table comparing how much weight three paper bridges held. Ask students to choose the best design and explain their choice using one result and a labeled sketch.
