What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations, measurements, and models to explain results or suggest a solution. They share their thinking through speaking, writing, or diagrams, then identify evidence in a classmate’s explanation and respond respectfully.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a clear explanation and points to specific data or model features that support it. The student can present the idea, summarize a peer’s evidence, and ask a relevant question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a guess as evidence or list numbers without explaining how they support an idea. They may think active listening means waiting to speak, or that respectful disagreement is not allowed.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a plant growth data table. Each student explains which condition worked best using two data points, while the partner records the evidence and asks one question.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build and test a paper bridge, record how many cubes it holds, then use the results to propose one design change.

  2. Show a melting ice graph and ask, “What happened, what evidence supports your explanation, and what question would you ask a classmate?”

  3. Play an evidence match game where teams pair explanation cards with supporting data cards and justify each match aloud.

  4. Map puddles around the playground, measure their sizes, and propose a drainage solution supported by the measurements.
