What Students Need to Do

Students make a claim, select evidence from data or models, and explain how it supports their thinking. They propose solutions, share ideas clearly, and respond respectfully to others’ evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use specific measurements, observations, or model features to support a conclusion or solution. The student can present ideas clearly and identify useful evidence in a classmate’s explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an opinion as evidence or list data without explaining how it supports a claim. They may believe respectful discussion means agreeing rather than questioning ideas with evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a small data table comparing three paper towel brands. Ask them to recommend one brand, cite two data points, explain their reasoning, and write one evidence-based response to a classmate’s choice.

   Test three bridge designs with craft sticks and pennies, record load data, then recommend a design using the results.

   Write which soil drains fastest, cite two measurements, then respond to a classmate by naming their strongest evidence.

   Play Evidence Sort: teams match claim cards to data and model cards, then explain why each match supports the claim.

4. 04

   Track classroom trash for one week, propose a waste-reduction plan, and present the supporting data to the principal.
