What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain scientific findings and design solutions using clear claims, observations, data, and reasoning. They share ideas through speaking, writing, diagrams, models, and group presentations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a format that fits the audience and purpose. They explain how evidence supports their thinking, respond to questions, and contribute clearly during group work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list results without explaining what they mean. They may treat opinions as evidence, leave diagrams unlabeled, or let one group member do all the communicating.

How to Assess It

Give students a simple data table from an investigation. Ask them to write a claim, cite two data points, and explain their reasoning in three sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pairs test which paper towel absorbs most, then present a labeled bar graph and a one-minute evidence-based explanation.

  2. Ask students to write: Which result surprised you, and what observation or measurement supports your response?

  3. Play Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Match by having teams connect prepared claim, data, and explanation cards, then defend each match.

  4. Students study cafeteria waste data and create a one-page proposal explaining one practical solution to the principal.
