What Students Need to Do: Students explain a scientific idea or design solution using observations, test results, drawings, models, or speech. They share their thinking alone and with a group, then answer questions or revise unclear parts.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives a clear claim and supports it with relevant evidence. The student contributes to group work and presents the group’s thinking in a format others can understand.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give an opinion without evidence or list observations without connecting them to an explanation. They may copy a group answer, leave out their own thinking, or focus on decorating a presentation instead of making it clear.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Draw and label one way a plant changes as it grows, then write two sentences explaining what evidence shows the change.

Lesson moves

In pairs, build a foil boat, test it with pennies, then present one design change using the test results.
Students observe a melting ice cube, write what happened with one piece of evidence, then compare explanations with a partner.
Play Evidence Match, where teams pair explanation cards with observation cards and justify each match aloud.
Have groups create a poster explaining how to reduce classroom paper waste, including the problem, solution, and reasons it should work.
