What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations, counts, drawings, or simple models to explain what happened and suggest a solution. They share their thinking, listen to classmates, and point out evidence that supports an idea.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student makes a clear claim and supports it with a recorded observation, measurement, or model. The student can explain an idea alone or with a group, then respond respectfully to evidence shared by others.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give a guess or opinion without naming evidence. They may think a model must look exactly like the real object, or repeat a classmate’s idea without explaining the evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students this result: “A toy car traveled 8 cubes on tile and 3 cubes on carpet.” Ask them to explain the result, draw a model, and tell a partner which number supports their explanation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build paper bridges, test each with pennies, record the totals, then draw a stronger bridge and explain the change using test results.

  2. Ask, “Which classroom object would make the best rain hat, and what observation supports your choice?”

  3. Play Evidence Match by pairing picture cards showing investigation results with explanation cards that the results support.

  4. Inspect a puddle near the playground, then have groups sketch a solution and explain how their observations shaped the plan.
