What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pay attention while a classmate explains an observation or idea. They name the facts that support the idea, then respond politely with a question or comment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can repeat a classmate’s main idea and point to an observation that supports it. The student waits to speak and responds without insulting or interrupting.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat every detail instead of choosing evidence that supports the idea. They may say “I agree” without explaining why, or think respectful disagreement is not allowed.
How to Assess It
- In pairs, have one student explain why a classroom object will sink or float. Ask the partner to name one piece of evidence and ask one polite question.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs observe an ice cube melting, then one student explains while the partner repeats the strongest observation and asks a polite question.
Ask, “Which observation best supports Mia’s idea, and how could you respond if you disagree?”
Play Evidence Echo, where students earn a point by restating a speaker’s idea and naming one supporting observation.
Discuss a rainy-day clothing choice, then have students identify the weather observation used as evidence and offer respectful responses.
