What Students Need to Do: Students listen closely to a classmate’s science explanation and pick out the observations or data that support the claim. They ask relevant questions, build on ideas, or disagree politely with reasons.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can restate a classmate’s claim and name the evidence used. The student waits for a turn and gives a respectful, on-topic response.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every detail as evidence, even when it does not support the claim. They may focus on planning a reply instead of listening, or think respectful discussion means always agreeing.
How to Assess It: In pairs, have one student explain why a wet paper towel dried faster in sunlight. The listener must restate the claim, name one supporting observation, and ask one relevant question.

Lesson moves

Pairs test which paper towel absorbs more water, then listeners record each speaker’s claim and one supporting measurement.
Ask, “Which soil is best for seeds, and what evidence supports your answer?” Partners restate each other’s reasoning before responding.
Play Evidence Detective by reading claim cards with three details, while teams identify the supporting detail and explain their choice.
Show a short weather forecast, then have students name the evidence the meteorologist used and give one respectful response.
