What Students Need to Do: Students listen for observations, measurements, and results that support a speaker’s claim. They summarize the point, then ask a useful question or respond politely.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the speaker’s claim and select the evidence that directly supports it. The student waits to speak and responds without insults or interruptions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may repeat every detail instead of choosing evidence tied to the claim. They may treat agreement as proof of listening or disagree with the person rather than the idea.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Read aloud, "Dark soil warmed fastest because it reached 31°C, while sand reached 27°C." Students record the evidence and one respectful follow-up question.

Lesson moves

Pairs test two paper towels for absorbency, then each student summarizes a partner’s claim and names the measurement that supports it.
Ask, "Which evidence supports Maya’s plant-growth claim, and what respectful question would you ask her?"
Play Evidence Match by reading claim and detail cards aloud while teams identify the detail that best supports each claim.
Play a short weather report, then have students name the forecast, supporting data, and one question for the meteorologist.
