What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine objects, models, and simple charts to notice features, repeated results, and relationships. They compare two objects by a shared attribute, such as length, weight, or capacity. They test a design against a clear goal and explain what a model shows or leaves out.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can describe a pattern in a picture graph or set of test results. The student can compare two objects, judge whether a design met its goal, and name one strength or limit of a model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a design because they like its color instead of checking the goal. They may compare different attributes, such as one object's height with another object's weight. They may think a model must look exactly like the real object.

How to Assess It

Give students two paper boat designs and a tally showing how many counters each held. Ask them to choose the boat that meets a five-counter goal, explain the pattern, and name one way the boats differ from real boats.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two foil boats, test each with counters, record the results, and decide which boat meets the goal of holding five counters.

  2. Show a toy animal and ask, “How is this model useful, and what can it not show about the real animal?”

  3. Play Pattern Detective with picture graphs, where pairs point to a repeated result and state what the pattern shows.

  4. Compare two classroom water bottles by height and capacity, then choose one that fits a lunchbox and explain the choice.
