What Students Need to Do: Students test a simple object or design for a stated job. They use one or two clear criteria, observe the result, and decide whether it did the job.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a paper bridge that must hold five cubes, a student tests it and counts how many cubes it holds. The student compares the result with the criteria and explains the decision using evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Some students decide an object works because they like how it looks. Others change the test midway or say it passes when it meets only one of two criteria.
How to Assess It: Give each student an index-card ramp that must roll a toy car to a tape line. Ask the student to test it, mark pass or try again, and draw the result.

Build a foil boat, then test whether it floats for ten seconds while holding five counters.
Discuss: Should a block tower pass if it is tall enough but falls before ten seconds?
