What Students Need to Do: Students identify the stated criteria for a design or object. They inspect or test it, record evidence, and decide how well it meets each criterion.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use a checklist or test results to rate an object fairly. They support each rating with a specific observation and suggest a useful improvement.
Common Misconceptions: Students may judge by personal preference instead of the stated criteria. They may check only one feature or claim something works without evidence. They may also confuse criteria with materials or object parts.
How to Assess It: Give students test results for a paper bridge that must span 20 centimeters and hold 20 pennies. Ask whether it meets each criterion and require evidence.

Lesson moves

Build paper towers, then use a checklist to rate whether each tower stands 30 seconds and supports one index card.
Show two pencil holders and have students write which better meets stability, capacity, and easy-access criteria, citing one observation.
Play Design Judge: teams draw an object card and a criteria card, then award points only when classmates provide matching evidence.
