K.12 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students observe plants and animals and name what each needs to survive. They explain how the environment provides air, water, food, sunlight, soil nutrients, space, and shelter.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly match a plant or animal with the things it needs. They can point to evidence in a picture, schoolyard, or simple investigation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say plants eat soil, or that sunlight can replace water. They may think all animals need the same food or that shelter is only a house.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a tree with a bird nest. Ask students to circle two plant needs and two bird needs, then explain one choice.

   Give pairs plant, animal, water, food, sunlight, soil, air, space, and shelter cards to sort and match.

   Ask, "What would happen if a plant had water but no sunlight?" and record each student's reason.

   Play Needs Match by having students draw an organism card and race to collect its correct need cards.

   Walk around the schoolyard and photograph places where plants or animals find water, sunlight, food, space, or shelter.
