What Students Need to Do: Students watch familiar animals and name what each one needs to stay alive. They connect each animal with air to breathe, water, suitable food, room to move, and a safe place to hide or rest.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given an animal picture, students can point out how its surroundings meet each need. They can explain what might happen if one need is missing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think shelter alone gives an animal everything it needs. They may overlook air because they cannot see it, or confuse open space with shelter.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw a place where a rabbit can live, then point to or label its air, water, food, space, and shelter.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a toy animal and need cards, then have them build a complete habitat in a tray using classroom materials.
Show a rabbit under a bush and ask, “What does the bush provide, and what must the rabbit find somewhere else?”
Play Animal Needs Match by pairing animal cards with pictures of suitable food, water sources, open space, and shelters.
Walk around the schoolyard and look for places where birds or insects find food, water, room, and protection.
