What Students Need to Do

Students compare body parts and behaviors of species living in the same habitat. They explain how each feature or behavior helps an organism find food, avoid danger, reproduce, or handle local conditions.

Students connect a specific structure to its job and survival benefit. They also classify behaviors as instinctual or learned and support each choice with evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a body part without explaining its function. They may assume every behavior is learned or that instinctual behaviors require practice. They may also confuse habitat features with organism structures.

How to Assess It

Show a sea turtle and an orca hunting together. Ask students to identify one survival structure and classify each animal's behavior as instinctual or learned, with evidence.
