What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare body structures of several animals or plants that share a habitat. They explain how each structure helps an organism get food, move, avoid danger, or meet another need.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a specific structure to its job using observations, images, or models. The student can explain how different species meet the same need in different ways.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a body part without explaining what it does. They may assume organisms sharing a habitat have identical structures, or confuse learned behaviors with physical structures.
How to Assess It
- Show photos of a duck and a frog in a pond. Ask students to identify one structure on each and explain how it helps that organism survive.

Give groups tweezers, spoons, and clothespins as bird beaks to collect different foods and record which tool works best.
