What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify features such as shape, material, size, and arrangement. They explain how those features help or limit what an object, organism, or system can do. They also predict function from structure and needed structure from function.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare two bird beaks and explain which foods each can handle, using visible features as evidence. The student can also trace how parts of a bicycle brake work together to stop the wheel.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name a part and its job without explaining how its shape, material, or arrangement makes that job possible. They may assume similar-looking structures always have the same function. They may also ignore how parts interact within a system.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Which tool would better retrieve a bead from a narrow tube, needle-nose pliers or standard pliers? Name two features that support your choice.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a spoon, strainer, tongs, funnel, rice, and water; students test which features make each tool suited to a job.
Show two bird beaks and ask, “What food suits each beak, and which feature supports your claim?”
Play a card sort game matching structures, functions, and evidence, then require students to correct one mismatched trio.
Examine a bicycle brake, then trace how the lever, cable, and pads work together to stop the wheel.
