What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify key parts, shapes, materials, and arrangements in an object, organism, or system. They explain how those features help it work and predict how a change would affect performance.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students support each explanation with a specific feature and its effect. They can compare two designs and explain why one works better for a given job.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a part and its job without explaining the link between them. They may assume similar functions always require identical structures or that changing one part affects nothing else.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A cactus has a thick, waxy stem. Explain how that feature helps it survive, then predict what could happen if the coating were thin.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a plastic spoon, fork, and knife, then have them test each with clay and record how shape affects performance.

  2. Show a bird wing and airplane wing, then ask, "Which shared features help each move through air, and why?"

  3. Run a card match with structures, functions, and changed-part cards, then require teams to justify each set before earning a point.

  4. Students inspect a reusable water bottle, label three parts, and explain how each part's material or shape helps prevent leaks.
