What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a part's shape, material, and arrangement, then connect those features to the job it performs. They also predict how changing the part could affect the whole object, organism, or system.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar example, students use visible evidence to explain how a feature helps a part do its job. They can predict a likely result if that feature is removed or changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a part or its location without explaining how it works. They may assume each part has only one function or claim a feature helps without citing specific evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a bird's hollow wing bone. Ask: How does this bone structure support flight, and what might happen if it were solid?

Ways to Teach It
Have groups test spoons, slotted spoons, and tongs for moving different materials, then connect each tool's design to its performance.
Show broad leaves and pine needles, then ask students to write how each shape might work well in its environment.
Give teams structure and function cards to match, requiring a spoken explanation using the phrase works because.
Examine a bicycle brake system, then sketch how the lever, cable, and pads work together to stop the wheel.
