What Students Need to Do: Students identify living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem. They describe how organisms use food, water, air, light, shelter, and space to survive.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can study a pond, grassland, or garden and correctly sort factors as biotic or abiotic. The student uses observations to explain at least two organism interactions with those factors.
Common Misconceptions: Students may count only animals as biotic and overlook plants, fungi, and microbes. They may call water or sunlight food, or list factors without explaining how an organism uses them.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph of a pond. Ask students to name two biotic factors, two abiotic factors, and explain one interaction that helps an organism survive.

Lesson moves

Place a hula hoop on the schoolyard, then have pairs record organisms, nonliving factors, and one observed interaction.
Use a pond photograph and ask, "How does one organism depend on both living and nonliving factors?"
Play Ecosystem Match with organism cards and factor cards, requiring students to explain each match before keeping the pair.
Examine a local pollinator garden and trace how one insect uses plants, sunlight, water, soil, and shelter.
